Why Stumps Are Such a Common Problem in Greater Vancouver
The North Shore has some of the most heavily treed residential properties in Canada. Douglas fir, Western red cedar, big-leaf maple — these trees grow large, and when they come down, they leave stumps that don't go anywhere on their own.
A stump in the wrong place can block a new fence, a driveway, a garden bed, or a deck. In Vancouver's wet climate, an old stump becomes a sponge for moisture. That moisture attracts carpenter ants and other wood-boring insects that are already a bigger problem here than in drier parts of Canada — because our mild winters don't freeze them out. Getting the stump ground out soon after a tree comes down is the smart move.
What Dynamic Rents: Two Walk-Behind Grinders and a Skid Steer Attachment
Dynamic stocks a 6HP Honda stump grinder and a 13HP Honda stump grinder, both walk-behind machines. They also offer a stump grinder attachment for their skid steer fleet.
The 6HP unit is the lighter machine. It's easier to maneuver in tight spaces and is the right call for smaller stumps — ornamental trees, hedge bases, stumps under roughly 300mm (12 inches) in diameter. Most homeowners find this machine manageable on their own.
The 13HP unit hits harder and grinds faster. It's the better choice for large stumps — mature cedars, big maples, anything with a wide base and deep root flare. If you have several stumps to get through in a day, the 13HP saves you significant time.
The skid steer attachment pairs with a rented skid steer to handle the largest stumps or multiple stumps on a site where the skid steer is already being used for other work. It's a productive option for landscaping crews clearing a whole property.
Walk-Behind Access: The Reality on North Shore Lots
One of the most common questions before renting a stump grinder is: will it fit through my gate? Walk-behind stump grinders are designed to be relatively narrow, but you still need to measure before you book.
North Shore properties often have fenced backyards with gates that were built around a standard 36-inch (90cm) opening. Most walk-behind stump grinders will fit through this, but tight or angled gate approaches can be tricky. Before you pick up, measure your narrowest access point — including any turns the machine needs to make.
Steep slopes are another North Shore reality. Stump grinders are heavy. If the stump is on a significant slope, think carefully about how you'll control the machine going downhill. Call Dynamic and describe your site — the team has seen it all and can give you honest advice.
How Deep Do You Need to Grind?
Most stump grinders cut 150–300mm (6–12 inches) below the surrounding ground. That's enough for the vast majority of uses — laying sod, planting a garden bed, putting in a new fence.
If you're pouring concrete or building a structure where the stump used to be, you may need to go deeper, or have the remaining root material excavated out entirely. A stump grinder handles the stump itself and the main root flare. The lateral roots spreading out from the stump will stay in the ground and rot on their own over time — that's fine for landscaping but worth knowing if you're planning to dig in that area.
One North Shore-specific note: big conifers like Douglas fir and cedar have root systems that spread wide and shallow. After grinding, you may notice the ground is uneven or soft in areas around the old stump as those roots slowly decompose. Top up with soil and reseed or resod as needed.
Safety: What to Know Before You Start
Stump grinders throw wood chips fast. Keep all bystanders — especially kids and pets — well back from the machine while it's running. Chips can travel 15 metres or more. Point the discharge chute away from windows, vehicles, and people.
Before you start, locate any underground utilities near the stump. Irrigation lines, power conduits, and gas lines are often found close to established trees on developed North Shore properties. Contact BC One Call (1-800-474-6886) at least three business days before you dig or grind near a property line or known utility corridor.
Wear a face shield, hearing protection, and closed-toe boots. Don't wear loose clothing near the machine.
