Jumping jacks are standard for compacting trench backfill in clay soils, compacting fill in confined areas where a roller can't maneuver, and preparing sub-bases in areas with high clay content — a common condition in parts of North Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.
They're narrower and more compact than plate compactors, making them the right choice for trench work, foundation perimeters, and tight access areas.
Smooth Drum Rollers: For Asphalt and Large Area Compaction
Walk-behind smooth drum rollers (also available as ride-on units for larger projects) are the standard tool for asphalt compaction and large-area subbase preparation. The smooth steel drum distributes compactive effort evenly across a wide pass, making them efficient for driveways, parking areas, road patches, and large granular subbase areas where a plate compactor would take many passes to achieve the same coverage.
For asphalt work specifically, timing is critical — asphalt must be compacted while it's still within the required temperature window. Having the roller on site and ready before the asphalt crew begins paving is essential.
